| Hydroseeding spray as it is used in road construction.
Synerchem International Inc.
Calgary-based Synerchem International Inc. produces chemicals used by the oil and gas industry. One of their products is a hydro seeding, grass growing mulch used for erosion control. A blend of fibre, chemicals and grass seed, the product is sprayed on hills and sloped areas after construction to help grass seed stick, grow and ultimately prevent erosion. Traditionally, the spray is made of grass seed in shredded paper.
Through the Alberta Biomaterials Development Centre*, Synerchem engaged Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures' fibre team to help develop a new proprietary mix of agricultural fibre and chemicals. The new product is proving to be extremely effective. Standard rain table tests measured enhanced product performance at 30% above standard. In a Panama Canal field test during monsoon season its superior ability to stick and prevent erosion better than anything else the Panama Canal Authority has ever seen, was demonstrated.

Synerchem is now building a factory in Calgary to supply the new product to clients internationally. In addition to product development support, the Alberta Biomaterials Development Centre helped locate funding for the trials and capital equipment required in the new facility. The plant is expected to begin operations summer, 2011.
*Alberta Biomaterials Development Centre is a virtual centre that offers entrepreneurs and businesses, the collective research strengths of Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, and Sustainable Resource Development.
